Super hot Mallika’s slimy new avatar!

At last a director has given Mallika Sherawat the look of her career: naagin, the snakewoman. It's called Hisss, and you have to admit she looks scary and sexy at the same time in this still. The director? None other than Jennifer Lynch, daughter of the cult American filmmaker, David Lynch. Many years ago, Jennifer had made Boxing Helena, another twisted erotic thriller. Mallika plays a snake who can transform herself into a stunningly beautiful woman, and then turn back into a half snake, half woman.

The make up effects are by Robert Kurtzman, the artist behind Vanilla Sky and Evil Dead. The kind of make-up used is MUFX (prosthetic make-up) which is a technology that has won numerous awards. Two make-up artists have been working on Mallika's look and the material she wears is so slimy that at times it just sticks to the skin. Hiss will also star Irfan Khan. Hiss is a joint Bollywood/Hollywood co-production with Govind Menon and as producers.

Abhishek will play Ravan in Mani Ratnam film

Contrary to rumours that Abhishek Bachchan will play Lord Rama in Mani Ratnam's Ravana, the filmmaker has finalized south star Vikram to play Ram in the film.

Instead, Abhishek will play the role of Ravana. Although Abhishek had played a grey character in Mani Ratnam's Yuva, Ravana is his first film where he will be playing an out-and-out villain.

Ajay Gehi (of Maqbool fame) and Ravi Kishan will play the roles of Ravan’s brothers, Vibheeshan and Kumbhakaran, respectively. However, Mani is yet to finalise an actor who will play Lakshman.

Ravana will be shot in South India and some parts of Srilanka and will go on the floor in the first week of October. The film will be made in three languages - Hindi, Telugu and Tamil.

Veteran actor Poornam Viswanathan passes away

Veteran character artiste Poornam Viswanathan passed away in Chennai on Wednesday after a brief illness. Mr. Viswanathan is survived by his wife, son and two daughters.

Poornam Vishwanathan was a Tamil News reader with All India Radio who announced India attaining freedom in his news bulletin in 1947. He later on went on to become a good character artiste and theatre person. Mr. Viswanathan’s performance in films such as ‘Varusham 16,’ ‘Keladi Kanmani,’ ‘Aasai,’ ‘Mahanadi’ and ‘Varumaiyin Niram Sivappu’ are unforgettable. He was at ease in both comedy and melodrama.

The 87-year-old actor died of multiple organ failure at a private hospital, hospital sources said.

Drona Releasing Tomorrow

While there are a number of movies releasing over the next several months, such as Akshay Kumar starrer Chandni Chowk to China, Aamir Khan starrer Ghajini, Shahrukh Khan's Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Salman Khan starrer Wanted, none is quite like Drona which introduces Abhishek Bachchan in the title role of in and as Drona. The 45 crore mega action-adventure is the most awaited release this Dusshehra/Eid on October 2 and could go long ways in reshaping box office this year.

Going into flashback, in the year late 1985, Amitabh Bachchan rode in on a horse-carriage in Manmohan Desai starrer MARD and despite being critcially panned, box office records were shattered when Mard released across the country in 1985.

Almost a generation later, Abhishek Bachchan is setting out to take control of the box office once more with a modernized incarnation of the action-adventure with a barrage of modern technology at his disposal.

However special effects and hyped leading men don't always guarantee even so much an opening let alone box office glory, as was proven when the 'improved Hrithik Roshan' Harman Baweja's mega budget Love Story 2050 failed to evoke even a respectable response at the box office.

Fortunes looks to be different for Drona however as it promises to set new standards in the action-adventure genre while giving the new generation of Bollywood fans a glimpse of the heydays of the lethal Manmohan Desai-Amitabh Bachchan cinema of Mard and Coolie, which were landmark blockbusters of their decade.

Says a source, "Many people are doubting the film after the debacle of Love Story 2050, but watch out for Abhishek Bachchan now. He's very good as Dron. The public will love him in this film."

Drona tells the tale of a foreign raised non-chalant NRI student who comes to discover the uniqueness of his identity, the history of his people, and his true calling; thus setting off an adventure back to reclaim the ancient legacy of his people in India.

Parts of Drona were shot in Central Europe, not far from where Abhishek Bachchan himself grew up and attended school in his younger years.

Drona stars Abhishek and real-life mother Jaya Bachchan. The heroine of Drona is Priyanka Chopra. It is set for a massive release across India in between Dussehra and Eid on October 2nd.

Priyamani satisfying everyone in tollywood

Priyamani, the dusky beauty is hoping to please younger generation as well as older generation parallelly. It is a fact that she is being paired opposite to Nandhamuri Balakrishna in two films. One film is being directed by Mahadev, who is making his debut as a director and another film is being directed by N. Shanker which is a film produced by Actor Kalyan Ram. Bhagyashree is making a comeback in a new avataar

Just when she is making a comeback to Bollywood in a new glam and sêxy avataar, comes the gossip that actress Bhagyashree is splitting with husband Himalay.

A TV channel spun the tale further by alleging that she had walked out of her marriage and was, therefore, getting a makeover done and returning to films.

Bhagyashree is furious. “Himalay and I were interviewed on two separate occasions and asked general questions about my make-over and films, but the interviews were edited to appear as if we had split,” she said. “Himalay was upset. I told him, ‘Chill, we are watching the programme together under one blanket, what more do you want’?”

The actress is contemplating legal action against the media house that ran this story. But BT asked the all-important question, given the fact that Bhagyashree had turned her back on Bollywood in the past because she only wanted do act opposite Himalay is her return to films the cause of any friction between the couple? “No,” she laughed, “Himalay is happy with my make-over, I’m good arm candy for him, he feels like he has a new woman in his life now.”

Vijay’s 50th Film would be his father’s direction

Who will direct the 50th film of ‘Ilayathalapathy’ Vijay? The news is that Vijay’s father and veteran director S.A.Chandrashekhar, who will produce the film, may direct it too.Three other names are heard as of now- Hari, Prabhudeva and ‘Jeyam’ Raja.

It should be remembered that the dad-son combo had not succeeded in their earlier ventures, ‘Aadhi’ and ‘Sukran’. So it would be a hard decisiion for S.A.Chandrashekhar to make on whether he himself should direct Vijay’s 50th movie.

Vijay is currently shooting for the Prabhudeva-directed ‘Villu’, his 48th film. His 49th will be AVM’s ‘Vettaikkaran’, to be directed by debutante Babusivan.
